March Break – Time for Rest & Relaxation…and Physical Activity?

March Break is not over yet – the long awaited break for kids (and some parents) is still around for several more days! It’s a time for a winter escape, a staycation in town, or a welcoming of Spring. Though the daily schedule may be a little different from the usual, keeping active this March Break can still be top of mind – all it takes is a little planning! We’ve got some tips for staying active this March Break:

  • Schedule it in: Choose a time for each day of the week to do something active. Mark it on the calendar, schedule it on your phone – whatever you need to remind yourself to take an activity break.
  • Try a different activity each day – go for a walk around your neighbourhood, find a nearby trail to go for a hike, organize a play date with friends to try something new!
  • Explore your community – visit your local community centre or YMCA and see which low cost activities you and your kids can participate in. Is there a rec centre with a walking track near you? Some offer free indoor walking. This is a great way to learn about the resources in your community.
  • Did you know that libraries offer things like LEGO mania play time, puppet shows, and yoga for kids? With public libraries sprinkled throughout the city there’s a chance you may even be able to walk or ride bikes to get there.
  • Try a new activity that your family has never done before – rock climbing, indoor skating, trampolining. What about visiting a nearby museum or taking part in a cooking class?
  • Involve children in household activities or healthy meal preparation
  • Have a family challenge – who can log the most activity over the week?
  • Take advantage of amenities – are you away for the week? Use the pools, fitness centres, trails and walking paths to ensure an active vacation!

Be sure to celebrate at the end of your week by recognizing the efforts and accomplishments made by your family to be active!
