Our Trainees

(Post Doctoral Fellow)

Sujane is currently a postdoctoral fellow working with Dr. Kwan. Her background is in knowledge translation science/practice, life-course epidemiology, and collaborative methodologies that centre the perspectives of systemically marginalized communities. Sujane's current research focuses on cultivating and sustaining physical activity behaviours among children and youth from diverse backgrounds. Sujane enjoys regular physical activity (hiking, swimming, and softball) and making short films.

(PhD candidate)

Laura St.John is a fourth year PhD Candidate from the University of Toronto. Laura completed her Bachelor’s degree at Wilfrid Laurier University and her Masters of Science at the University of Victoria. Laura’s research focuses on health and quality of life of individuals with intellectual disabilities, specifically through the lens of physical literacy. To better understand this, Laura’s dissertation has centered around measurement of physical literacy with this population. In her free time, Laura can be found coaching volleyball or taking her dog, Bernie, for walks!

(PhD Candidate)

Maeghan is a PhD Candidate at the University of Toronto studying under the co-supervision of Dr. John Cairney and Dr. Kelly Arbour-Nicitopoulos. Maeghan’s research interests include child development, physical literacy, physical activity and play in children with and without disabilities. Her PhD dissertation is focused on the development and evaluation of a preschool intervention that targets motor and social-emotional skills. Maeghan’s favourite way to get active is to play sports or walk her dog!

 

Mentoring Future Leaders

Jaime is a Registered Early Childhood Educator and a second year PhD student at The University of Queensland. She completed her Bachelor of Early Childhood Education and Master of Education at Brock University. Jaime’s doctoral research focuses on developing the physical literacy of Australian Early Childhood Educators and preschool children. Her favourite way to get active is to lift weights or go for long bike rides.

(MSc Student)

Imran is currently completing a MSc in Kinesiology at McMaster University where he graduated with a BSc in Psychology, Neuroscience & Behaviour. His Master's research is investigating factors influencing physical activity behaviour during adolescence with a specific focus on the intention-behaviour gap during this critical period. Imran’s favourite way to get active is by playing baseball, soccer and running!

(MSc Student)

Joceline is a recent graduate from the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Child Health at Brock University. Joceline has a passion for working with children with disabilities. In the upcoming 2021 school year, Joceline is about to begin her Master of Arts in Child and Youth studies at Brock University. In her free time, Joceline likes to exercise and take her dogs on walks.

Alan is a second year student at McMaster University in the Health Sciences program, specializing in child health. He is currently doing a project on the ADAPT study, looking at pre- and post-COVID changes in health behaviour in the adolescent population. Outside the lab, Alan enjoys watching basketball and trying out new local restaurants!

 

Fostering a culture of collaboration

(BA Student)

Fiona is a fourth-year undergraduate student at McMaster University, currently finishing her Honours BA in Aging and Society with a Specialization in Mental Health and Addiction and a Minor in Psychology. Fiona completed her undergraduate thesis on first-year mental health in response to COVID-19 and will be pursuing this research during her MA in Child and Youth Studies at Brock University in the Fall. Fiona’s favourite way to get active is walking with her dog at local hiking trails.

Carah Porter

(MSc Student)

Carah is currently working towards a MSc in Psychology at The University of Texas at San Antonio under the supervision of Dr. Brown. She is a recent graduate of Ohio Northern University where she earned a BSc in Psychology. Her research interests include the intersections between physical activity and identity as well as factors that influence healthy movement behavior engagement. Carah’s favorite way to get active is by hiking or cycling.
